So you're curious about life in France...

Bonjour tout le monde !

This is the very first installment of my much-hyped newsletter! Ça y est ! Here we go! 😊

Since I started my YouTube channel last year, a lot of people have reached out asking me questions that are related specifically to relocation; visas, moving pets, rental apartment hunting, things I maybe once had some legitimacy talking about, but which for me, after over 17 years in France, are now sort of distant memories. I can still help out as much as possible and talk about my (now somewhat foggy) recollections of my own experiences, though, and I hope to be a resource to help point you in the right direction, towards reliable, competent experts who can better help you with your specific questions about those things.

My impression is that many of you are considering a move to France, and wound up on my channel, and now signed up for this newsletter, because you were looking for more info about what life is like here. Info and reflections about the ins-and-outs of actually living here as a foreigner? THAT I can provide, well, my own version anyway, à la dijonnaise.

So, I would like this newsletter to be informative and practical, while also interjecting a little bit of the cultural, culinary, or maybe even historical side of France, which is what, for me, really makes life in France fascinating and enjoyable.

I’m thinking each installment of the newsletter could focus on an important subject, and then provide a few amusing and/or useful resources like:

  • A useful resource: I referred to this one in my YouTube videos about the cities of Nancy and Besançon, but I wanted to mention it again because it is such a user-friendly database for anyone looking for info on and the ability to compare French cities: https://www.villedereve.fr/
  • A funny or useful French word or expression: This is one of my favorite words in French: peinard (pay-nar). For example: After our visit to Nancy last weekend, this weekend, we’re just hanging out at home, and we’re just going to be peinard, chilling at home, relaxing at home. Ce week-end, on va juste rester à la maison, peinard.
  • A great YouTube video to check out: This video is a great little overview of yet another amazing French city, Nantes, a city I’ve had the pleasure of visiting on several occasions: https://youtu.be/HKS8GCH-1d8?si=MvFKWop-EZtmLMpI I’d love to go back and spend a few days checking it out through the lens of someone who may be thinking of moving there. I’ll put it on my list!

How does that type of format sound?

I would definitely love more input from all of you as to what exactly you would like from me in terms of info and insights. I have a million ideas about what I’d love to share with you, but I want to make sure that you’re getting what you want from me, as well.

Absolutely let me know, and thanks again for signing up!

Amicalement,

Suzi

Bonjour tout le monde, For those of you thinking about moving to France or living here already, or even if you’re just curious about life in France, there are so many fascinating, well-written books out there. I thought I’d give you a little blurb about several of my favorites, some I have mentioned on my YouTube channel before, and others I have not, in case you’re in the market for a good summer read. Books I’ve discussed on my YouTube channel: Almost French, by Sarah Turnbull: Ahh, the...

Bonjour tout le monde, Our pattern for the past few years has been that once every two summers we head back to the US, and then the next summer we stay in France. Last summer we went to the US, and so, again, this summer we're planning on staying in France. But we don't just stay in France. We stay home. By choice. I love it here in Burgundy in the summer. As a teacher, I'm off of work. We often ship the kids off for a few weeks to Mamie's, I sign them (and myself!) up for activities...

Bonjour tout le monde, Today, May 22, or 22 May (let’s be honest, it’s so much more logical to have the day first, then the month, n’est-ce pas ?) marks 18 years since I moved to France. My husband and I got married in early June, so I arrived a few weeks ahead of time, to… I don’t know what… He had basically planned everything for the wedding before I even arrived, and when I asked what it would be like, he told me, “just a normal wedding.” Uh huh. Our images of what constitutes a “normal...
